The human body can do its work properly even after eating less than 200 mg of sodium per day. Excess of sodium causes water to accumulate in the body in large quantities and this affects the performance of the heart and increases blood pressure. This is why most dieticians recommend taking a low-sodium diet, with a sodium intake of between 1100 and 1500 milligrams (about 1/2 teaspoon) daily. Also beware of products which claim to have less sodium in the product by taking potassium instead of sodium as it may be more harmful.

DIET TIPS FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Give fiber-rich food prominence
Fiber-rich foods help in controlling blood pressure by keeping the digestive system healthy. Fiber is found in abundance in many fruits, nuts and legumes such as beans, peas and whole grains. Drink distance from caffeine

Eat away from chocolate, sugar, and other stimulants
Apart from caffeine, avoid the consumption of high amounts of chocolate, sugar, sugar beverages, cold drinks and excess fat in the diet. If you are at risk of high blood pressure, try eating a vegetarian diet instead of eating too much meat, milk products and eggs etc. Eat less yellow egg, red meat, full cream milk and salt.
